This obsolete disk operating system was developed by IBM for its personal computers back in the early 1980s. It is based on the MS DOS environment from Microsoft.
PC DOS
PC DOS is a legacy operating system that provides an interface between the user, applications and hardware. The software is intended for discontinued desktop PCs and not compatible with modern devices. Users are able to experiment with old utilities in DOSBox.
Main functionality
You can execute programs, organize files on the hard drive and access various connected external devices. There are flexible system parameters for customizing the behavior and visual appearance of the OS.
Some basic utilities like a text editor, file manager, backup tool and disk defragmenter are provided. Please note that PC DOS uses a command line interface for performing all tasks.
Advantages
There is support for FAT12 and FAT16 file systems, which allow up to 32 MB and 2 GB of disk space per volume respectively. Users are able to access more than 640 KB of RAM through special drivers as well.
The operating system is compatible with TSR devices and programs. They are intended for loading additional functions into memory and running processes in the background. Additionally, wildcards for matching multiple files or directories with a single pattern are available.
