This discontinued operating system from NeXT Software offers users a customizable desktop environment and a powerful object oriented development framework.
OPENSTEP
OPENSTEP is a Windows program for installing an obsolete OS made by NeXT Software. Development tools such as the Foundation Kit, AppKit and Display PostScript are included in the distribution.
Desktop environment
This operating system offers you a clean and uncluttered interface centered around a dock for launching third party applications. Each utility resides in a separate window with custom titles, scrollbars and buttons, following a uniform design language. There is support for drag and drop functionality and contextual menus as well.
The object oriented nature of the underlying architecture makes OPENSTEP flexible and scalable, allowing developers to create complex projects. Similar to NeXTStep, instruments for handling distributed modules are included. Additionally, users can edit the codebase and preview resulting changes in real time.
History
NeXT Software, the developer of OPENSTEP, was founded by Steve Jobs after he left Apple. Although this operating system is obsolete, it laid the foundation for Mac OS X, a very popular OS installed on all Apple computers. Core elements from the legacy platform like the dock, windowing framework and overall user experience are still incorporated in the modern environment.
