SCENECT

SCENECT is a free program for Windows developed by FARO Technologies with the aim of creating 3D models for printing. In contrast to other scanning solutions, it requires you to manually record the data using either Microsoft Kinect or Xtion Pro Live.

The tool relies on working with widely available hardware, rendering it suitable for diverse user groups. Potential scenarios include prototyping, medicine, architecture, and graphic design. You may also need to install software called Kinect for Windows SDK.

The graphical interface leverages Kinect sensors to capture point clouds in real time. Its innovative approach combines digital photogrammetry with a CMOS sensor and depth mapping facilitated by an IR emitter/receiver. The data fusion is executed on the GPU, resulting in a unified stream.

Indeed, the graphics processing unit serves as the cornerstone of the tracking system. Nvidia Quadro boards demonstrated outstanding performance during live capture sessions, whereas less powerful hardware resulted in frequent tracking losses.

The Kinect device compares multiple images taken at a rate of 30Hz, each with a resolution of 640 by 480. The CPU also plays a crucial role, with optimal outcomes achieved using high frequency i7 processors.
