ADRIFT
Create and play text adventures with ADRIFT Developer and Runner. Organize locations, objects, characters and tasks in a graphical editor.
About ADRIFT
ADRIFT is a toolkit for creating and playing interactive fiction. In these games, written descriptions and player commands drive the story. ADRIFT Developer provides a graphical workspace for building an adventure, while Runner opens the finished game.
Building an adventure
The editor organizes locations, objects, characters and tasks. These elements can be grouped into folders and connected to describe the world and the actions available to the player. Menus and property dialogs allow authors to work on the story without writing a conventional program for every interaction.
Pictures and sound can accompany the text. The map helps authors follow the arrangement of locations. Opening a saved adventure in Runner lets you check how descriptions, movement and tasks work together.
Choosing a package
The official download page lists ADRIFT 5.0 release 36, dated 12 September 2020. The full installation is intended for users who want to create games. A separate Runner package is available for playing existing adventures, and the site also provides help files and older versions.
Developer is a Windows application. Check the documentation for the selected package and system before installing it. The project source is available in the author's repository under the BSD 3-Clause licence.
