THC Hydra is an open-source program for Windows that enables you to guess the password to an archive or web service. It is possible to use either the built-in or external dictionary. The utility features support for more than fifty different protocols and request types. Its main advantage is the high speed of password cracking achieved by relying on several threads.

Setup

It is necessary to mention that the software distribution does not require installation on a computer. This means, you need to unzip the downloaded archive using WinRAR, TUGZip or HaoZip. After this step, you can simply run the executable file by double-clicking. Please note that the tool does not have a graphical interface. All actions are performed via the command line with administrative rights.

Guess passwords

After launching the program, you will see the instructions on the screen. In order to start guessing passwords, you have to specify the path to the archive or the address of the web resource. You are also able to provide the username and port for connection. Moreover, you have the option to select passwords for several websites at the same time.

Dictionary and templates

The utility allows you to use the built-in dictionary or set a custom template to generate a security phrase. If you pick the second option, you can set the maximum and minimum password length. The function of selection by mask is available. It should be noted that you may use this application only for assessing the protection level of archives and web resources, since cracking someone else’s is illegal.
