This obsolete system component was developed by Microsoft to provide a high performance interface for multimedia applications in Windows 3.1, 95 and 98.
WinG
WinG is a graphics library for legacy versions of the operating system from Microsoft such as Windows 95. It allows users to display visual elements on the screen in a fast and efficient way. Please note that WinG is not compatible with modern Windows versions.
History
Microsoft first introduced this system library in 1994. It was used in many popular video games of the time, including Doom, Heretic and Hexen. The popularity of WinG is partly explained by its ability to bypass the slow Graphics Device Interface and access the video card directly. This results in smoother and faster visuals.
Advantages
One of the main features of this program is the support for hardware acceleration. It is possible to scale low resolution images and automatically adjust the color scheme. You can generate beautiful animations without overburdening the CPU.
Users are able to switch between different display modes like 256 colors, 16 bit and 24 bit. This way developers can optimize source graphics for various types of screens.
Tools for playing back video and audio files are available. Moreover, there is an API for inserting multimedia elements into any third party application.
