WD SmartWare is a Windows utility for adding easy-to-use automatic backup capabilities to your external hard drive. Additionally, there are tools for device diagnostics.

How it works

You are able to use this software to back up the important documents and other files to the compatible WD drives such as My Book, My Passport and My Cloud. The connected external HDDs are displayed in the main window and can be selected as a backup destination.

The tool automatically scans the contents of the computer to sort all the data into several categories like pictures, music, movies, mail and documents. It is possible to backup only the specific types of files.

Retrieving the data from a backup is easy. Users can restore any item directly back to the original location in case it got corrupted or was mistakenly erased.

Please note that this software only supports the Western Digital hard drives. To create backups on the Seagate HDDs you can download Seagate Dashboard.

Security

The program uses powerful hardware encryption that protects the data on the external drive. Users are able to set a password for preventing unauthorized access.

To access the contents of the HDD on a computer that does not have WD SmartWare installed, you can use the official Drive Unlock utility.
