With the help of this open source software users can stream media files from the computer to any device that supports the DLNA or AirPlay communication protocol.
Universal Media Server
Universal Media Server is a Windows utility for streaming movies, music, photos and other media content to TVs, game consoles, smartphones, tablets or hardware players. You are able to automatically scan the network to detect compatible devices and find shared folders.
How it works
Users can browse and play media files on any computer or smartphone connected to the same local network via a web interface or a corresponding native app. There is support for transcoding, which means that the content is converted on the fly to formats that are suitable for the target device. This way it is possible to watch any movie without worrying about codecs, containers or resolutions.
Supported hardware
Universal Media Server is compatible with a wide range of devices, including Sony PalyStation 3, Microsoft Xbox 360, Samsung Smart TVs, Apple TV, Roku, Chromecast, etc. You are able to play media files in various formats such as MKV, MP4, MP3, FLAC, OGG, JPG, PNG and GIF.
Similar to Logitech Media Server, external subtitles in any language can be attached to the video. Additionally, there is an option to install third party plugins that provide extra functionality.
