Terragen is a Windows application that lets you design beautiful and unique virtual landscapes. There are tools for adding lakes, rivers, hills, mountains and other geographical features.

How it works

The main interface contains instruments for inserting new objects and parameters into the scene. A window for previewing the project before rendering is provided as well.

Users are able to adjust the atmosphere conditions like the rain, sunlight and wind. The sky and clouds can be drawn in any hue and placed on a custom height above the terrain.

There are tools for adding new light sources. It is possible to insert several multicolored suns and moons.

Please note that Terragen is oriented toward professional designers. There are more accessible tools for constructing 3D environments like World Machine.

Objects

You can create various shapes like cubes, spheres and polygons. Objects such as the rocks, grass, trees, ponds and rivers are provided. Every model is highly customizable. You are able to resize, rotate, flip and distort the objects to better fit the terrain.

Rendering

After configuring all weather conditions, lighting sources and 3D objects users can finish the project by processing it with the included ray tracing renderer. It produces realistic images and detailed animations with the help of professional anti-aliasing and motion blurring instruments.
