SD Memory Card Formatter is a Windows program for securely erasing data from SD cards. Support for the SDHC and SDXC standards is provided.

Main purpose

Using the utility you can correctly format an SD memory card. All modern operating systems include their own tools for this operation. However, it is recommended to perform the formatting with this official app supported by the SD Card Association. Otherwise the file system may be not optimized for the Secure Digital standard and the card will perform slower than usual.

Interface

The main window contains a drop-down menu for selecting the card to format. There is a Refresh button for reloading the list of detected devices. Card capacity data is provided. Additionally, the logo indicates a media type such as SD, SDHC or SDXC.

There are two formatting options: Quick and Overwrite. The first mode simply clears a file table on the device. It is a fast but unreliable operation. All data can be easily recovered by software like Handy Recovery.

The Overwrite setting offers you a much more secure solution. Every sector on the card is filled with zeroes to completely erase all files and folders. The process can take up to several hours depending on the media capacity.

Users are able to customize the volume label and click the Format button to begin the operation. Progress bar at the bottom indicates when the process is finished.
