GtkRadiant is a Windows game-editing program originally created by id Software. The main goal of this utility is to provide users with tools for creating new maps and levels for various id titles. The newer versions are developed and maintained by the Radiant Community.

Review

GTKRadiant is the editor of choice for most games developed by id Software or based on the Quake engine. This application supports a wide range of titles like Doom 3, Half-Life, Quake, Jedi Academy and others. In contrast to TEdit, it includes both an editor as well as the compilation component. This allows you to create both mods and standalone games.

Editing basics

The program features a highly-intuitive graphical user interface which consists of several interactive fields. The 2D Viewport allows you to see your map from above, from the front, or from the right. You can change the view by pressing CTRL+TAB combination. This is also the place where you create brushes.

In the 3D Viewport window, you are able to see your map similar to what it would look like in-game. You can navigate by right-clicking and moving the mouse. It is also possible to use the wheel to scroll back and forth, as well as the arrow keys to strafe.

From the Texture Browser you may choose any textures you want to add to your project. On the left side there is a list of folders from which you can select the desired items and apply them to geometry.

Features

  • free to download and use;
  • compatible with modern Windows versions;
  • allows you to edit maps in id Software games;
  • can be used to create custom mods;
