This utility allows users to restore accidentally removed items on a hard drive or USB storage device. There is support for FAT32 and NTFS file systems.
FreeUndelete
FreeUndelete is a Windows tool for recovering any files deleted from the computer. It is possible to search for erased documents, photos and other content on your HDD or USB flash drive.
File restoration
The list of all storage devices is located on the left side of the main window. Users can double-click the drive name to start scanning it. There is an option to analyze the disk again in case the operation fails. However, the files from a severely corrupted device may be impossible to recover.
After the scan is complete all potentially restorable items are displayed on the right. There are additional attributes for every file such as the type, location, size and creation date. You are able to filter the items by name and extension. The destination folder for recovered data is specified at the bottom of the main interface.
To begin restoration users can click the Undelete button. The process may take from several minutes to a few hours depending on the media condition. There are other programs with similar functionality like FinalRecovery and Handy Recovery. Users are able to try them in case FreeUndelete fails.
Recommendations
It is necessary to stop any activity on the disk where deleted files are located. Writing data to the device can irreparably damage erased data. Installing new programs lowers your chances for a successful operation as well.
It is worth mentioning that recovered items may require some additional work. Entirely overwritten sections of a file cannot be restored.
