Disk2vhd is a Windows utility oriented toward IT professionals. It helps users transform HDD volumes into VHD or VHDX files to streamline tasks like creating data backups, virtualizing operating systems and migrating physical servers to virtual environments.

Conversion

After starting the program, you can view the list of detected logical partitions along with their labels and sizes. It is possible to select one or several items for processing. The next step is to specify the correct path to the target file and click Create to begin the operation. Please note that the transformation may take up a lot of time depending on drive speed and capacity.

There are checkboxes to enable Volume Shadow Copy mode and force the VHDX format. Moreover, users are able to automatically prepare the resulting disk image to be run in a virtual environment. This is especially advantageous for experimenting with different system configurations while minimizing potential downtime.

Best practices

Like in XenConvert, you are instructed to ensure that the target drive has sufficient free space for the finished VHD file before starting the process. Unnecessary large packages can be manually excluded to optimize package size and reduce conversion time.
