dirLock
dirLock is a program for Windows that allows you to prevent outsiders from accessing important files. Using it, you can set a password for individual folders. It is also possible to view the list of protected directories.
Configuration
After installing the application, you need to set a master password. It is necessary to mention that it does not give you the ability to create different keys for individual directories. There is also no option that can be used to recover a forgotten password. For this reason, it is recommended that you write it down and keep it in a safe place.
Locking and unlocking
In contrast to AxCrypt, to restrict access to a folder, you need to right-click on the name of the folder and select the Lock/Unlock option. After that, enter the password and confirm the choice. Protection is maintained even if the catalog is copied and transferred to another medium.
When a directory is locked using DirLock, a message box is displayed, informing users that they do not have the appropriate privileges for the action they want to perform. They can unlock the folder either by accessing the Windows Explorer context menu and selecting the corresponding item or via the main window of the program.
Interface and options
The main window of the application shows a list with all the folders that are currently locked. You can choose the one you want to unprotect and it will become accessible to all users.
In the Options menu, you have the option to disable the shell extension, so that folders could only be unlocked using the main interface of the utility. It is also possible to toggle the Security Tab to be able to view some details about the directory, even if it is locked.
